As part one of the first successful English settlements in North America, Varina, the county’s easternmost district, is especially storied, with centuries-old houses standing proudly along the banks of the James River. On his farm in the area, John Rolfe planted a special type of Spanish tobacco seeds in hopes of finding a successful cash crop to aid the colony in its success. Little did he know at the time that tobacco would end up being more successful than he could have ever thought. After his success, Rolfe named is property Varina Farms after the strain of tobacco he planted, and the name stuck!
Varina has experienced a lot of history since then. It served as the county seat for Henrico until 1752 and saw a lot of combat during the Civil War. Its neighborhoods are home to many firsts in the Richmond area, such as Highland Springs, one of the first streetcar suburbs. Despite no longer having any dairy farms, it was also at one point considered to be the dairy capital of the state. The area continues to be a rural community with roughly two-thirds of the district dedicated to agriculture. There is plenty to do here, from the Virginia Capital Trail that spans all the way from Richmond to Jamestown, parks like Dorey Park and Chickahominy Park, as well as plenty of boat landings and waterside restaurants with gorgeous views of the James and Chickahominy rivers.

He went out of his way to fill me in whenever they were headed out for the day and checked with me to make sure I was happy with his work once he completed the projects. As I am sure you are aware, it is rare to see such great customer service nowadays so I wanted to share our experience.
