Free Union was first called Nicksville after Nick, a freed slave blacksmith, opened his shop there in the early 1800s. When the post office was established in 1847, the village was renamed Free Union to avoid confusing the area with neighboring Nixville, the name of another post office in the county. When I showed the demo and dry-out results to the general contractors, they remarked that the job was done with great attention to detail. The site was clean and ready for appraisal and restoration.
