A small town, with just under 7,000 residents in the 2010 census, Ettrick was named around 1765 by a merchant from Scotland for its similarities to his hometown of Ettrick in Selkirk, Scotland. During the civil war Ettrick was home to a large confederate hospital, and then later in the 19th century, the first state-supported Black college was founded here in 1882, as Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute.
