When the post office opened in 1851, a community sprung up around it, and the city of Kemp was born. That community was later named for Malvina Kemp Watkins, the wife of the first Postmaster. Following the Civil War, settlers started flocking to it, emboldened by the development of a railroad close to the city. After a slight population decline post-World War II, the city bounced back and now holds a population of more than a thousand people (as of the 2010 Census). It’s location north of the Cedar Creek Reservoir means that many people pass through it on the way to the lake, meaning the city gets a lot of business. As Kaufman County continues to grow, more and more are starting to flock to this city in an effort to eke out a comfortable country life.
