Named after Wartburg Castle in Germany and established on land ceded by the Cherokee, Wartburg was founded in the mid-1840s by George Gerding. The town was bitterly divided during the Civil War with some residing families having members on both sides of the conflict. Wartburg became the county seat of Morgan County in 1870 due to its superior economy over the former county seat of the town of Montgomery. Wartburg is positioned between mountains and rivers. This location makes a great retreat for hikers and any other outdoor enthusiasts. The town is the headquarters for the Obed Wild and Scenic River, Frozen Head State Park, and Lone Mountain State Forest.
