Established in 1809 as the county seat for White County, Sparta was named after the ancient Greek city-state of the same name. The city was once nearly elected to be the capital of Tennessee. It lost to Nashville by one vote. Sparta grew at a rapid rate thanks to being located on the stage road between Nashville and Knoxville. An Inn built by the Fisk brothers in the 1830s served as a stopover for people such as President Andrew Jackson and sixth state Governor Sam Houston. The Sparta Rock House is a state historic site and is still standing today. Bluegrass legend Lester Flatt called the town home. There is an annual Fall celebration held in his honor on the town square.
