The small town of Pleasant Hill was first settled in 1819. It has a land area of a little more than 1.5 miles. Pleasant Hill Academy was established in 1884 to provide a broad education to the area youth. The main building of the school, known as Pioneer Hall, is still standing today. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and houses a museum of the early days of the town. Dr. May Cravath Wharton, a physician from Minnesota, established a medical clinic in the academy to provide care for the local residents. A nursing home in the Uplands Village community bears her name today. Pleasant Hill holds its Pioneer heritage close to its heart. This is evident by taking a stroll through the community that is steeped in history.
