The town was named for its chief executive, Samuel Mosby Mascot (1824-1883), who served as mayor from 1873 to 1877 and again from 1879 to 1882. During his term as mayor he spearheaded a project to improve milk production in the area.

History of Mascot

The history of Mascot, Tennessee describes the settlement of the area in which it stands by persons who arrived as settlers around the time that European immigrants were beginning to come. The first recorded settlers were English and Spanish trappers, who set up hunting camps in this region beginning in the late 17th century. In particular, Spanish traders established temporary outposts in the form of trading posts at strategic locations along various rivers and trade routes throughout what would become Tennessee.
