The city of Kingston dates back to 1792 when Fort Southwest Point was established as a federal frontier outpost for the federal government. The outpost was named Kingston and was established in 1799. The city was named after Major Robert King, an officer at the fort in the 1790s. As of 2020, the city has grown to approximately 6,000 people. The project is designed to capture the history of Kingston online from local residents and preserve these oral history records for future generations. It is well worth listening to. Residents discuss what it was like to grow up in Kingston and include stories about what life was like for their parents.
The Roane County Chamber of Commerce offices are located in Kingston and provide chamber services to Kingston and the surrounding area. The chamber also coordinates many weekly and monthly events, which are listed on its website calendar. On the fourth Wednesday of every month, the chamber hosts a coffee social networking meeting at Shorty’s Café in Rockwood. The next one is planned for Jan 22nd, 2025, from 8-10 a.m.
