Willington, SC is located in McCormick County and owes its existence to the educational and religious needs of the regions settlers. Dr Moses Wadell's Willington Academy established in 1804 attained national prominence and led to Willington being known as a school town in the early 1800's. Willington evolved as result of the building of the Savannah Valley Railroad during the mid 1800's. Willington also holds the distinction for first growing the Red Spider Lily in the United States. Native son Dr James Morrow who bought the bulbs from Japan during expedition to open up trade in 1853-54.
