What is the history of Hilton Head Island?
Hilton Head Island has been inhabited since as early as 1521 by Spanish explorers. There are many historical landmarks such as The Old Shipyard, built in the early 1800s; The New Shipyard, built later in 1813; and Port Royal Plantation, one of the oldest plantations on the island. Hilton Head has also been known as a resort area since the 1920's.
