Although founded in 1851, Rainier was not always known by its current name, originally called Eminence by Charles E. Fox the town’s first postmaster. Later the name was changed to Fox’s Landing before finally settling on Rainier, being inspired by Mount Rainier which can be viewed above the city. Most famously known for the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant that had structural issues resulting in closure and subsequent demolishing. Rainier is a collection of smaller communities with the addition of Prescott Oregon, which utilizes Rainier for its post office and telephone exchange. Rainier shares the Lewis and Clark Bridge which connects north to Longview, Washington. The Lewis and Clark Bridge is the only bridge that spans the entire width of the river between Portland and Longview.
