Originally located on Native American land called Neahkstow, Hammond serves as the entrance to Oregon’s Fort Stevens State Park. Originally incorporated under the name “New Astoria”, in 1915 the town’s citizens voted to change the name to Hammond so it shared the same name as the local railway station and post office. Hammond was named after Andrew B. Hammond, a Montana native who moved to Oregon and worked on the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad that travels from Astoria to Portland. The town houses a small population of around 1,300 residents. Most notably, the popular 1993 film Free Willy had a scene filmed in Hammond Bay. The iconic scene showed Willy (Keiko the whale in real life) jumped over the rock wall in the Hammond Bay to freedom in the Pacific Ocean. Keiko lived in the Newport Aquarium for a short while after the film before being transported to Iceland and eventually let back into the wild.
