Gearhart, Oregon was named after Philip Gearhart, a settler from Independence, Missouri who arrived in Oregon City in 1848 and rented a cabin in the Clatsop plains. Philip Gearhart purchased squatter’s rights in the south plains for $1,000 where he created a 640-acre donation land claim with a patent being granted in 1874. In 1889, a railroad connecting Astoria to Seaside started bringing more traffic through Gearhart which became attractive to tourists for its landscape and picnicking areas, especially the Ridge Path that went through the dune meadow of the original Philip Gearhart land claim. Although the town only has around 1,400 residents, it is known as a haven for those “allured by calm”. Artifacts of early transportation into Gearhart such as horseshoes, buggy steps, and spurs can still be found to this day with the proper metal detecting equipment. One notable home that is still sitting between C and D street in Gearhart is a home that was moved by boat in the 1880s from Astoria. The home was moved prior to the streets being built and therefore there is no access from either street.
