Founded in 1867, Columbia City is located in the heart of Columbia County. The founders of Columbia City had aspirations of becoming a main terminal for the Willamette Railway, however, Portland quickly took on that role and the railway never reached Columbia City. During World War I, Columbia City worked to build ships for the war effort, done by the Sommartson Shipbuilding Company. The company held an ideal location because the channel came so close to the shore where the ships were built. The Sommartson company held the military contracts until the end of the war. Steamboat navigation became a popular part of Columbia City which aided in the river development. In 1871 the McVey House was built as housing with a store on the first floor and residential quarters on the second floor. By 1891 the McVey house was also used as a Post Office, the home was the only boat landing in the city and served as a passenger and refueling station.
