Clatskanie was given its name to honor the Tlatskanai Native American tribe, along with the Clatskanie River. The Clatskanie River flows through town and empties into the Columbia River which is roughly four miles to the north. Originally the town was called Bryantville after the large family who was among some of the first settlers in the area in 1852. Many of these settlers came by the Oregon Trail. The first postmaster of the town, Enoch Conyers, who married one of the Bryant daughters, felt that it should be renamed after the Tlatskanai Tribe. Tlatskanai was a point on the Nehalem River that reached the Columbia River by passage through Young River. The city has been called a “Norman Rockwell” picturesque city because of its small size and the way it is nestled in the lush green hills and valleys of Oregon’s coastal range.
