Lancaster, OH is located in Fairfield County outside of Columbus, Ohio. This town was incorporated in 1831. The first newspaper, Der Ohio Alder, now the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, was founded in about 1807. 1834 marked the opening of the Lancaster Lateral Canal to commerce. By 1841, the Hocking Canal had been extended south to Athens following the acquisition of the Lancaster Lateral Canal by the State of Ohio in 1836. Now, Lancaster, OH is the center of a rich agricultural region principally of swine, dairy, and beef cattle farms. The principal industry is glass which includes a large producer of table glassware. There was a time when the Lancaster legal bar was considered the best in the state and, by some, even the best in the country. There are many important landmarks in Lancaster, OH such as Mt. Pleasant, Wagnalls Memorial, the locks at Lockville, Rock Mill, the Sherman Memorial, the William Reese home (currently the “Decorative Arts Center of Ohio”), the S. F. MacCracken home, and the Mumaugh Memorial. Located at the foot of Mt. Pleasant are the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. After gas was discovered in 1889, the Fairfield County Fair was famous for “Racing by Gas Light”, and the “Lake of Fire”. Ohio University also has a branch located here. Many, well-preserved early homes can be found on the hillsides of Main Street and Wheeling Street in Lancaster. With an awesome school district and a rich cultural heritage, Lancaster is a gorgeous city full of potential!
