The City of Cheviot was founded by James Smith in 1796, the discovery of a large spring prompted him to clear the area, and by 1815 it was officially named Cheviot by John Craig who named it after the boundary hills between England and Scotland. The tradition by the Carson family in 1806 established the Harvest Home Festival which still remains to this day, with a Park, that was originally their backyard and a yearly festival and parade which have gone on uninterrupted since 1806 except for wartime dates. There is also another historic landmark named the Cheviot Fieldhouse constructed in 1936, which boasts a basketball court, tennis courts, and also a ball field that was built in 1937.
