The hamlet is located in southern Westchester County on the east bank of the Hudson River and has a land area of 3.2 square miles. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,701. One of the most popular attractions is the National Museum of American History. You can also visit the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, which was completed in 1943.

The history of West Mount Vernon, New York is tied to the Erie Canal and its construction. The area was first settled by the Dutch in 1638 as part of Fort Orange. In 1664, the area would become part of the British colony of New York. The town was created in 1825 as a direct result of funding for the Erie canal, which would go on to change America forever. Although it has changed greatly since its founding, West Mount Vernon is still primarily a farming community that is home to people from all over the world.
