Collins is one of the oldest of the Southtowns, and also one of the southernmost in Erie county. Settlement in the area dates all the way back to 1811, when groups of Quakers moved in to make contact with the local Native Americans.
Collins itself, however, was not incorporated as a town for another ten years, in 281, when it split off from the town of Concord. It was named after a prominent family of dairy farmers.
Collins is full of natural beauty and surprises. One of our favorite spots to visit is McIntosh Woods. These woods are located between Collins and Gowanda and are one of the few places that you can find wild McIntosh apple trees, which were planted to serve patients at the now-defunct psychiatric center nearby.
