The town is located between Atlantic City, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The area was settled as "Hammondton" in 1812 but became known as Hammonton by the 1860's. People that moved to the town originally built a saw mill and later a glass factory. The area would soon after become known for a completely different business. Farming became a big business in Hammonton as the railroad moved in. Blueberries and strawberries were the main focus. In the 1920's the area was home to the Atlantic City Speedway. The first Hammonton Blueberry Festival was held in the early 1950's, a tradition that continues today.
