Butler was named after Richard Butler in 1881, who owned and ran the Hard Rubber Company. A larger railroad station and a post office were built to accommodate the growing community. The station has been a museum since 1977. Additional companies moved into the area, contributing to the growth and stability of the town. Residents enjoy charming landscapes and green spaces. The Kinnelon Reservoir is a favorite, with hiking, boating, and areas to fish. The High Mountain Park preserve features scenic trails, diverse wildlife, and gorgeous views of the area.

- The Butler Public Library organizes many events each month that may be interesting. The Canasta Club meets regularly each Friday - September 23rd, October 11th, and October 18th—at 10:30 a.m. A family movie night is planned for October 18th at 7 p.m. Smokey the Bear's Scavenger hunt is scheduled for November 1st. - Butler Recreation offers men's basketball pickup games on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Butler Gym. Volleyball is also scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Aaron Decker Gym.
- Town Council meetings are planned well in advance. They will be held on September 17th, October 15th, November 4th, and December 17th, beginning at 7 pm, in the Council chambers at One Ace Road in Butler.
