It was once known as Shapleigh Mills, and in the nineteenth century, the village had two woolen mills, four shoe factories, several sawmills, and a carriage shop. Henry H Townsend founded the Miltonia Mills in 1872, which produced fine wool blankets. The company ceased operations in 1950.
