Millard was founded in 1870 by Ezra Millard, naming the city after himself. Ezra left a legacy because he established the Omaha National Bank, Omaha Library Association, Omaha School of the Deaf, and Omaha’s first public high school. After many long legal fights, the town of Millard was annexed by the city of Omaha in 1971. There were attempts from the state legislature and the court system to annex Millard into the Omaha Public Schools, but failed. Millard Public Schools remained independent.
The Millard Public Schools system has 25 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, and 4 high schools. Today Millard Public Schools is the third largest school district in Nebraska. Schools could not be built fast enough as the population was growing in Millard. So, homes were occasionally used as classrooms. In 1960, the hot lunch program was introduced and students were paying 30 cents to eat everyday. In 1962, school administrators were developing a new and growing special education program.
The population of Millard grew by 635 percent from 1960 to 1970 which set a record for the most growth in Nebraska history. In the early 1980s Enrollment growth slowed when high inflation resulted in fewer homes being built.
In 2022, Millard experienced one of the driest seasons in history. There were many wind storms and fires due to the dryness of the ground. SERVPRO will help the cleanup and restoration of the fires run smoothly.
