The name Escatawpa comes from comes from the Choctaw Indian name for the area which is Oestcatawpa which translates to trim cane. Pronounced Uski-a-tapa the full translation means a place where cane is cut. Escatawpa became the towns official name in 1855 when Henry Ehlers opened the Escatawpa Post Office.
