The history of Shrewsberry, Missouri follows the story of the Paine family. Many of the earliest settlers were members of this family. Jasper Paine was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in 1746, but his family moved to New Jersey when he was young. He eventually married Abigail Curtis and had two sons and six daughters. After moving his large family to Kentucky and then Indiana, they settled in what is now Shrewsberry Township, Missouri. For years he owned a large farm and worked hard raising livestock and crops.
