Maryland Heights is a second-ring suburb in St. Louis in St. Louis County. It was incorporated in 1985, and Edwin Dirck was elected the first mayor.

History of St. Louis
The city was officially founded on Feb. 14, 1764 by three Frenchmen: Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclede and August Choteau—leaders of a local fur trading company who had been granted land in this region by France's King Louis IX—In 1877, St. Louis County was formally established as a separate entity from the city of St. Louis by drawing official boundaries around its territory and separating it from the city itself (which remained inside those drawn lines).
