History of Lakeshire
The history of Lakeshire, Missouri is long and proud. The area itself is rich in Native American heritage. The first settlers came to the area in 1806 when a band of Cherokee Indians hid there while fleeing the U.S. Army in the westward expansion. They found what they described as “a paradise” and settled on the banks of Deer Creek where it runs into Lake DeSmet. While Lakeshire became a town in 1820, it wasn't until 1940 that the town reached its current size of about 650 people.
