In 1854, a land spectator from Little Falls named James Fergus, hired Joseph Whitford to find a place for a town along the Red River. When Whitford set out to find the perfect location, he ran into a group of Indians who told him about the site with “swift water”. Whitford took the Indians' advice and continued on his journey to the site. When he arrived, he deemed it a perfect location for the new city and named it Fergus Falls after his employer. Interesting enough, James Fergus never lived in the city of Fergus Falls because a friend convinced him to move to Montana instead. Fergus became a very successful rancher and even was inducted to the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Fergus Falls is not only a great tourist destination, but it is also a wonderful place to live! Families with children enjoy the Otter Cove Children’s Museum, Dr. Allen Magnuson Park or visiting the Otto the Otter statue in Grotto Park. Young adults may enjoy a number of breweries including; Outstate Brewing Company, Fergus Brewing Company and Union Pizza and Brewing Company. The town is also located along the Central Lakes Trail, which is a 55 mile long bike trail stretching from Osakis to Fergus Falls. Definitely a must if you are an outdoors lover. Fergus Falls is really a town for all different ages!
