Clare Michigan, sits mainly in Clare County with a portion of the southern city limits in Isabella County, was established in the logging era and was the home of the first successful logging railroad, the Lake George and Muskegon Railroad. Although the High School's mascot, the Pioneers, can be named after the Cities rich history in logging and railroads, Clare is also known for the Purple Gang. A notorious group of men that controlled much of large portion of Michigan during the Prohibition era. One of the most Notorious landmarks in Clare where the Purple Gang would gather and make tunnels throughout the town is the Doherty Hotel. The hotel still stands today and is fully operational .
