The city of Freeport, Maine has seen a lot change since its beginnings as a small textile town. History of Freeport
The first settlers in what is now Freeport, Maine arrived in 1803. The area was originally called Tideswell’s Island after one of the first families to settle on the land. In 1818, a group of investors purchased the land and named their new town after the African city of Porto Bello located on the northern coast of Panama. The town was incorporated by an act of legislature in 1848 and was officially selected as Maine’s summer capital in 1914.
