Sharpsburg, Maryland is a beautiful, rural town which boasts a rich history. At the end of the French and Indian War, Joseph Chaplin founded the town and named it after his friend, Horatio Sharpe. This area was very important to the American Civil War in that it was the location where the Battle of Antietam was fought. This battle kept the Confederacy from winning ground into northern territory and caused more deaths and casualties than any other battle fought on American soil in a single day. Sharpsburg is also located near other civil war battlegrounds, such as Gettysburg in Pennsylvania.
With a population of only 705 residents, the pace of life is very relaxed and simple in this wonderful part of Maryland. Located just 13 miles south of Hagerstown, Sharpsburg is in an ideal location if you are looking to stay or live somewhere with a country feel, but still able to access plenty of the city life within a reasonable distance.
