An unincorporated community in Montgomery County, the commercial center of Ashton lies at the junction of Route 108 (Ashton Road) and New Hampshire Avenue (Route 650). The etymology of Ashton is unclear, as some longtime residents claim that it comes from reference to a large ash tree that stood at the junction of Routes 108 and 650. Others have stated it is a portmanteau of the names of two Thomas family homes, Ashland and Clifton, each located one mile from the 108/650 junction.

Ashton-Sandy Spring had a population of 5,746 as of the 2020 census.

There were 1,839 households, out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 19.1% of all households in Ashton-Sandy Spring were made up of individuals living alone, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.34.

In 2020, Montgomery County had a population of 1.05M people with a median age of 39.4 and a median household income of $111,812. Between 2019 and 2020, the county population grew from 1.04M to 1.05M, a 0.396% increase; and its median household income grew from $108,820 to $111,812, a 2.75% increase.
