The City of Methuen was originally organized as a town in 1725, Governor Dummer signed the act establishing the Town of Methuen, naming it after Sir Paul Methuen, a friend of the Governor’s and member of the King’s Privy Council.
Industrial growth in the 1800’s influenced Methuen’s development. Construction of the Methuen Cotton Mills at Spicket River falls in the 1820’s and the increased manufacturing of hats and shoes in small factories along the Spicket River spurred the centralization of Methuen’s economic, residential and cultural activities within the area around Osgood, Broadway, Hampshire and Pleasant Streets. Today, Methuen is seen as a quiet, family community. With established, tree-lined neighborhoods that are close to stores, markets, restaurants, a gym and the movie theaters nearby.
Three wealthy families -- the Nevins, the Tenney and the Searles played a significant role in Methuen’s history and how the town still looks and runs today. - Methuen City Hall - Originally designed as the Searles High School in 1904 for the Town of Methuen by local millionaire and community benefactor Edward F. Searles.

- Methuen Memorial Music Hall was built specifically to house the Great Organ, built originally by Walcker Orgelbau for the Boston Music Hall.

- The Nevins Memorial Library, the grand brick and stained glass library were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

We arrived home from vacation to find a broken toilet valve had completely flooded my mom's bedroom and basement. It was in the evening and we were stunned!
