Europeans first visited the area called Amherst in 1665, and the first settlements were established in 1727. The town is named after Jeffery Amherst, who was the 1st Commander in chief of the forces for North America during the French and Indian Wars. Amherst celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2009. The Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce meets monthly on the first Wednesday of each month. This is the perfect time to meet new members and local business people over coffee and refreshments. Meetings are held at 35 S Pleasant Street in Amherst from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.
The Jones Library at 43 Amity Street in Amherst offers many events for all ages throughout the month. For example, on Jan 21, the Sit and Stich group meets at 10 am. The ESL group meets at 10 am, and the Toddler Movement program meets at 10:30 am. There are Book club meetings, Story Time, and more later in the month. Enjoy Line Dancing at the Bangs Center in Amherst on Feb 3 from 2 – 3 pm. There is a Pilates practice session from 2 – 3 pm. The Wednesday market is open on Feb 5 from 10 – 11:30 am.
