History of Lafayette, LA
The Attakapa Native Americans lived in now-Lafayette before European settlers found this area. The French created "Petit Manchac," a trading post in this area along the Vermilion River. The area was initially developed by Europeans for agriculture, primarily sugar plantations. Once known as Vermillionville, this area was renamed after General Lafayette, a french aristocrat, in 1884. By 1898, the university put down its roots in Lafayette and opened in 1901. The university changed its name to the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1960, and its current name was solidified in 1999.
