Cumberland is a community in Indianapolis and was officially platted July 7, 1831. It was named for Cumberland, Maryland, the east terminus of the Historic National Road. The Cumberland Post Office was established in 1842, and by 1884, the Town had over 400 inhabitants, a railway station, a schoolhouse, and three churches. In 1922, Buckley's Restaurant, opened as a roadside Bar-B-Q stand and later became famous around the country. Cumberland's Park System provides amenities for residents, walking trails, baseball fields and picnic areas are available for use. There are three parks in the community, National Road Park, Honors Park, and Lions Park. The Town continues to expand today the community contains an estimated 6,000 residents, split almost equally between Marion and Hancock Counties.
