The early settlers of Underwood, Iowa arrived from 1845 to 1850. In 1847, a flour mill in Underwood was built but a few years later it was destroyed by a flood. In 2019 a new restaurant was built called the garcia family restaurant. Garcias offers authentic Mexican food. The Garcia couple was looking for a place to establish their restaurant for six months trying to find the best location. They found a place on Main Street in Underwood. Garcia pointed out that there were no Mexican restaurants between Harlan and Council Bluffs near Interstate access. The couple said Underwood gave them a sense of encouragement and it felt like home for them there.
The mission of the Underwood Community Schools is to nurture and guide their students by providing individual, comprehensive, and diverse learning experiences. The elementary school houses PK-5th grade, the middle school houses 6-8 grade, and the high school houses 9-12th grade. Most students in Underwood elect to partake in one or more activities offered by the district.
