In 1852 the town of Tabor, Iowa was founded by a few families from Oberlin, Ohio. They chose to settle in what is now called Tabor in order to found a Christian college which is now named Tabor college. Tabor College was in the town from 1853 to 1927. It closed due to financial issues. The college’s buildings housed German prisoners of war during World War II.
There are a few historical buildings in Tabor, Iowa including the Todd house. The Todd house was home to an abolitionist and congregationalist minister, John Todd. The house was built in 1853 when Todd moved to Tabor as the co-founder of Tabor College and the town Tabor.
Another great historical thing in Tabor is the underground railroad. The first rescue from the Underground Railroad was on Independence Day in 1854. Samuel Adams talked to the group of six. They were so eager for freedom. Adams started organizing a way for an escape. They traveled long and far once they hit Chicago they were placed on ships going through the Great Lakes to find freedom in Canada. Their entire journey lasted about a month. Their former owner lost his effort to regain his property. Paying slave hunters $50 per person to find them.
