The Ponte Vedra Beach, Sawgrass neighborhood is named for wetland plants called sawgrasses. Though they are technically not grasses, but sedges. Sedges superficially resemble grasses with their slender, stalked growth and long, spear-shaped leaves, but they are a different Genus. Sawgrass technically lies in the Palm Valley census-designated place (CDP) in St. Johns County, Florida, between the Intracoastal waterway to the west and SR A1A to the east.

Though the community is gated the clubhouse is open for dining and shopping to anyone willing to pay. Both golf courses, the famed Stadium Course where THE PLAYERS Championship is played annually and the Dye's Valley Course is accessible to all golf fans. Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa offers vacation packages that include golf experiences, tennis, pool, and Spa packages.
Across the street on the east side, on the east side of SR A1A Sawgrass Country Club is a private, member-owned gated golf and residential community that consists of villas and luxury homes. The first TPC was played here in 1977.
