History of Naples
In 1886, Kentucky US Senator John Stuart Williams and his partner Walter N. Haldeman—a Louisville businessman—founded Naples.
When promoters heard that stories were circulating about the mild weather and abundant fish near a certain town, they touted this place as "surpassing" Naples.
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad extended its reach in 1927, and that next year the Tamiami Trail linked Naples to Miami. The original Naples Municipal Airport was built during World War II as a US Army Air Force training field; it has been in operation since 1947 for general aviation purposes.
