Located about 20 miles northwest of Gainesville, High Springs offers residents and visitors diverse and unique offerings of art, antiques and outdoor adventures. High Springs is surrounded by natural attractions, which attract canoeists, cave divers and campers heading to the nearby Santa Fe River. High Springs is a place for snorkeling, diving, tubing or swimming in natural springs that flow at a steady 72 degrees all year long. High Springs is known as the “Gateway to the Springs” with quick access to Poe Springs, Gilchrist Blue Springs and Ginnie Springs.
The present-day area of High Springs was first settled during the late 1830s. One of the earliest settlements in the vicinity was at Crockett Springs, located about three miles east of present-day High Springs. In 1888, it became High Springs, and the town was officially incorporated in 1892.
The High Springs Historical Society Museum provides a window into pioneer life as it was during the late 1800s, early 1900s steam train era. The museum is housed in the restored High Springs Elementary School which is listed on the Historical Register.
Each spring, the city hosts its Annual Pioneer Days Festival. The festival is held in downtown historic High Springs and features live music, food, and an array of vendors, Kids Korral, and historic reenactments.
While High Springs is not on the coast of Florida, it is susceptible to lots of different weather. It experiences wide temperature fluctuations and Florida’s well-known rainy season and thunderstorms. High Springs also experiences its fair share of hurricanes during Hurricane Season, which goes from June 1 to November 30. If disaster strikes, property owners and businesses have 24/7 access to professional help for their property damage restoration.
