Fort Caroline sits right on the coast of St. Johns River outside of Jacksonville. Originally established by the French in 1564, the fort was built on the banks of the St Johns River. The name Fort Caroline was decided upon by the original settlers, who believed they were sailing towards a "city of gold" that they had been told existed somewhere near their location in America. A second group of French settlers arrived at the site nearly twenty years later and this is when the fort became known as La Caroline.

The Fort Caroline area is known for its enjoyable climate. The temperature ranges from 46 degrees to 90 degrees, depending on the season. Being on the coast, the climate is usually wet year-round. The best times to visit the area are said to be late March to late May and early October to mid-November.
