Gunbarrel, Colorado was settled originally by the Arapahoe Indians who hunted and fished along Boulder Creek. The history of Gunbarrel, Colorado is closely tied to what are known as the Rocky Mountains. The area was first discovered in 1541 by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado during his search for the legendary Seven Golden Cities of Cibola. In 1858, three gold prospectors traveled through the area. They found very little gold but were able to provide enough evidence of gold deposits to encourage other prospectors to come soon after.
