Except for Coal Creek running diagonally through town, there is not much to remind us of Crested Butte's beginning. Without coal, it's impossible to tell if our town would exist today. However, the mountains are perfect for skiing, which has become our primary industry. Residents know how much the town depends on tourism. Otherwise, town life is cozy, comfortable, and safe, like any other small town. Nearly everything is within walking distance, and the local bus service fills gaps. Such mobility makes it a very livable place.
Mobility on foot is one thing, but it's a sport when you're on skis. The annual Alley Loop starts Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 9 AM. What makes this so special is that every participant in the race is wearing a costume. Prizes are awarded to the fastest skiers and also to the best costumes. The calming and enticing Totem Pole Park is on Maroon Avenue at 3rd Street. On its northern side is a footbridge crossing Coal Creek. The other end of the bridge faces the continuation of 3rd Street. The Alley Loop route includes several bridges like this one.
