Shingle Springs - a town in the gold country foothills and sits directly on Highway 50 in El Dorado County has continued to develop since the 1850s. It was once a center for businesses and industries as the third oldest depot in California. Like many towns in California’s mother lode, Shingle Springs grew on the site of a mining camp which was set up by the gold miners during the California Gold Rush. The town name derived from a horse drawn shingle machine located near the springs at the edge of the mining camp. The clear springs made the town a natural stopping point for emigrants traveling. As the mining continued throughout the town, the camp sites grew and stretched along the creek side. Several landmark buildings were built as a stopping place for travelers such as The Shingle Spring House which was built by the Bartlett brothers and The Wells Fargo & Co Building on the highway which was referred to historically as the “Stone House” which was ultimately demolished. The rich history in Shingle Springs carries on in present day and the town continues to grow rapidly with new residents every year.
