The name Del Mar first came to railroad official Theodore Loop when his wife, Ella, referenced a poem written by early 1800’s poet Bayard Taylor. The poem was called “The Fight of Paso Del Mar”. He meant for the coastal development to be the top resort destination and, soon enough, his dreams were certainly met. Although, it wasn’t just a playground for tourists; it also became the home of a Naval Auxiliary Air Facility for blimps during WWII, as well as a venue for horse racing on The Del Mar Fairgrounds. In fact William A. Quigley, a resident of La Jolla, initially pitched the idea of the track to big-time singer and actor Bing Crosby. Shortly after, on May 6, 1936, they founded the Del Mar Turf Club together. Today, this historic fairground is home to the San Diego County Fair and The Scream Zone, a Halloween-inspired attraction. And though the permanent population of Del Mar is currently in a decline, we here at SERVPRO are ready to show up for the coast of San Diego.
