Nestled in the central part of Conecuh County, Evergreen has a population of 3,520 residents. Early settlers in the area made their way from Georgia and South Carolina in 1818. The city was founded in 1819 by Revolutionary War veteran James Cosey. The name Evergreen came from Reverend Alexander Travis’s reference to the city’s abundance of green foliage. The city was officially incorporated in 1873.
The city and surrounding area has a long history with fire and severe weather. The former county seat of Sparta was burned in 1866 by federal troops in a raid during the Civil War. This led to the county seat being moved to Evergreen. In 1882, a tornado swept through the city and destroyed every building except the Episcopal Church. Between November 7, 1985 and November 12, 1895, every home and business in the City of Evergreen was destroyed by fire. The Conecuh County Courthouse burned 4 times between 1868 and 1895. Evergreen was named the “Collard Green Capital of Alabama” in 1973 and the city hosts the Collard Green Festival annually.
The main attraction in Evergreen is located along Interstate 65. Conecuh Sausage was founded in 1947. The company is famous for its variety of hickory smoked sausage products. In 2021, the company opened a large gift shop just off of Interstate 65. They sell a variety of items including kitchen supplies, grilling supplies, Conecuh Sausage branded items, and of course, that delicious smoked sausage that you can enjoy at home or on site at their sausage bar. The shop receives guests from all over the world who make the journey to Evergreen to get a taste of that delicious, hickory smoked goodness.
