The town of Chatom of Chatom was founded in 1907 when it became the county seat of Washington County. Located in Central Washington County, the city limits of Chatom cover a total area of 10.9 square miles. The population of Chatom has fluctuated slightly over the last few years, dropping slightly from 1,288 in 2010 to 1,104 in 2020.

The mural on St. Stephens Avenue is called Scenes of Chatom, Past & Present. It was painted by Joe Wilson of Wilmer, Alabama.
